Hey Everyone,
It’s Competition Time!
I don’t watch a lot of TV but when a bunch of people you trust tell you to watch something, you watch it. That’s what happened with the Amazon original The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. I was in love right from the first scene and it only got better.
Poor Joe must’ve been soooo sick of hearing “woah, look at that dress, look at that outfit, look look look…” but that’s basically what it was like watching it.
For those of you who haven’t seen it yet, it’s about a 50’s housewife in New York whose life gets turned upside down and the journey she takes. It’s funny and clever and oh my, the costumes.
I used to wear a lot of vintage fashion, especially 50’s and 60’s which tend to suit my shape. I lived in Birmingham, UK where there were lots of vintage shops so it was easy to come buy at reasonable prices. However, in 2014 I moved to the USA and the places I lived in didn’t really have much on offer in the way of vintage. Fast forward and I’m sewing pretty much everything I wear but I haven’t really sewn that many vintages inspired pieces, despite having found tons of patterns in charity shops!
Mrs Maisel has inspired me to change that and I’d like you to come along for the ride!
Here’s link to the trailer if you’re still on the fence:
From 5th May to 5th July I’m asking you to make some kind of 50’s inspired garment. It can be from a real vintage pattern, a vintage inspired modern pattern or even a hack on any old pattern you like.
It doesn’t have to copy anything on the show, it’s mostly for inspiration, but there will definitely be some brownie points in it for you….especially if you manage to create the red dress Midge wears visiting her friend Imogene in the hospital in the 2nd Season and send me details on how to do it – ha! 😉
It also doesn’t have to be a dress, Susi and the fellas in the show wear some pretty great stuff too!
Based on creativity and general awesomeness I’ll pick 3 finalists and you, the fab Insta sewing community, will vote for your favourite, giving us:
